Description: There is a synthetic surface upon which dogs can run. It’s somewhat soft beneath your feet, provides great traction, and appears to be very durable with low maintenance. It’s great! The stuff is called FieldTurf. Other features include a parking lot right next to the dog park, double entry gates that are located on either end of the park, separate small and big dog areas, plenty of benches and picnic tables, dog watering stations, human drinking fountains, lots of community tennis balls and toys, bulletin board, garbage cans, poop bags, and lighting.

Blue Lake National Recreation Trail

Description: This 1.5 mile one way trail is located at Blue Lake, in the Modoc National Forest, at an elevation of 6,000 feet. At least 90 percent of the trail is shaded by white fir and massive ponderosa pine trees. The trailhead begins at the Blue Lake Campground and ends at the boat ramp. Dogs on leash are allowed at the campgrounds, on the trail and in the water. Please clean up after your pets. The trail is located is 16 miles from the small town of Likely. From Highway 395 go east on Forest Service Road 64. At about 10 miles you will come to a road junction. Stay on Forest Service Road 64 for the remaining 6 miles.

Clear Lake Trail

Description: This trail is located in the Modoc National Forest at an elevation of 5,700 feet. At .5 miles into the trail, you will reach Mills Creek Falls. Beyond that the trail serves as a major entry way to the trails of the South Warner Wilderness. Dogs on leash are allowed on the trail and in the water. Please clean up after your pets. To get there from the town of Likely, go 9 miles east on Co. Rd. #64. Then go northeast on West Warner Road for 2.5 miles. Go east on Mill Creek access road for 2 more miles. The trailhead is located in the Mill Creek Falls Campground.

Arcata Community Forest

Description: Leashed dogs are allowed on this 600+ acre park which offers 18 trails. The trails range from 1/10 of a mile to almost 2 miles long. The park is located on the east side of the City of Arcata, accessible from Redwood Park located at the east ends of 11th and 14th Streets; on the southern side from Fickle Hill Road, which begins at the east end of 11th and 7th Streets at Bayside Road; and from the east end of California Street which connects with L.K. Wood Blvd. north of Humboldt State University.

Crab Creek Trail

Description: This 2.5 mile moderate rated trail is located in the San Bernardino National Forest. On the trail, you may have to cross Deep Creek. Do not attempt to cross the creek when the water is high as it is too dangerous. Pets are allowed but must be on a 6 foot or less leash. Please clean up after them. The trailhead is located at Forest Road 3N34, west of the Crab Flats Campground. To get there take 330 north and go through Running Springs and Arrowbear to Green Valley Road. Turn left and go about 4 miles to the Crab Flats Campground sign at Forestry (dirt road). Turn left and go about 4.5 miles.

Crabflats Trail

Description: This 1.3 mile long moderate rated trail is located in the San Bernardino National Forest. The trail descends and joins up with the Pacific Crest Trail west of the Holocomb Crossing Trail Camp. Pets are allowed but must be on a 6 foot or less leash. Please clean up after them. The trailhead is located at Forest Road 3N34, west of the Crab Flats Campground. To get there take 330 north and go through Running Springs and Arrowbear to Green Valley Road. Turn left and go about 4 miles to the Crab Flats Campground sign at Forestry (dirt road). Turn left and go about 4.5 miles.

Stevens Trail

Description: This 4.5 mile trail is a popular year-round hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding trail which follows the northwestern slope of the North Fork of the American River. The trail offers a gentle slope that is suitable for novice hikers. Along the trail you can enjoy great views of the river, pass by several mine shafts, and see the China Wall built by Chinese laborers during the Gold Rush era in the 1850s. Please stay away from the mines because they are extremely dangerous and unstable. In April and May there should be a nice wildflower display. Leashed dogs are welcome. Please clean up after your dog. To get there from Sacramento, head east on Highway 80 towards Colfax. Take the North Canyon Way exit. Take this road past the Colfax cemetery to the trailhead. On weekends and in high use season, parking may be very limited.

North Yuba Trail

Big Trees Loop

Description: This .5 mile easy trail is located in the Tahoe National Forest and is a popular interpretive trail. The trail is accessible when the road is open, generally from late May to early November. Pets on leash are allowed and please clean up after them. To get there from Foresthill, take Mosquito Ridge Road 24 miles to Road 16.

French Meadows Reservoir

Benbow Lake State Recreation Area

Description: Leashed dogs are allowed. The park consists of about 1,200 acres with campsites and a large day-use picnic area. Hiking, picnicking and camping are popular summer time activities, while salmon and steelhead fishing are popular in the winter.

Humboldt Redwoods State Park

Description: This park is located along the scenic Avenue of the Giants. While dogs are not allowed on the trails, they are allowed in the campgrounds and on miles of fire roads and access roads. These paths are used mainly for mountain biking, but dogs are allowed too. There are both steep and gently sloping fire roads. Some of the fire roads are located next to the Albee Creek Campground. Pets on leash are allowed and please clean up after them. The park is located along the Avenue of the Giants, about 45 miles south of Eureka and 20 miles north of Garberville.

Mohave National Preserve

Description: Located in the heart of the Mohave Desert, this 1.6 million acre park offers rose-colored sand dunes, volcanic cinder cones and Joshua tree forests. The park offers hundreds of miles of dirt roads to explore the land in your own 4 wheel drive vehicle. There are many hiking opportunities including the Teutonia Peak Hike. This trail lets you explore a dense Joshua tree forest on the way to a peak on Cima Dome. The 4 mile roundtrip trail is located 10.5 miles south of I-15 on Cima Road. Dogs are allowed on trails and in the campgrounds. They must be leashed except dogs that are being used for hunting. Please clean up after your pet. The Bluffs – Panorama Park

Description: This walking and jogging trail overlooks the oil wells in the valley below. It stretches a number of miles from Bakersfield along Panorama Drive towards Lake Ming and Hart Park. There is also an exercise trail. Dogs on leash are permitted.

Kern River Parkway

Description: The Kern River Parkway trail is a paved biking, walking and running trail along the Kern River. It can be entered at many points, including Beach Park at the address listed here. The trail is about 12 miles long. Dogs on leash are permitted.

Kern River County Park

Description: This park consists of over 1,000 acres and includes a river, a lake, campgrounds and picnic areas. Hills surround the lake, and the Greenhorn Mountains stretch along the eastern horizon. Please note that Kern River currents are very strong at times and can be extremely dangerous. Do not leave children or dogs unattended at the river. The park is located about10 miles northeast of Bakersfield, off the Alfred Harrell Highway on the Lake Ming Road exit. Dogs must be on leash.

Beach Park

Description: This city park is a good park to take your dog while in Bakersfield. The Kern River Parkway paved exercise trail passes through here and there are picnic tables and open areas. Dogs must be on leash in the park and on the Kern River Parkway trail.

Big Bear Lake beaches

Description: There are various beaches along the lake on Hwy 38. You can get to any of the beaches via the Alpine Pedal Path. To get there, (going away from the village), take the Stanfield Cutoff to the other side of the lake and turn left onto Hwy 38. In about 1/4 – 1/2 mile, parking will be on the left.

Bidwell Park

Description: This park exceeds 3,600 acres, making it the third largest municipal park in the United States. The park is comprised of three major sections: Lower Park, Middle Park and Upper Park. Lower Park has children’s playgrounds, natural swimming areas, and vehicle-free roads for runners, cyclists, rollerbladers and walkers. Middle Park features ball-playing fields, picnic areas, the “World of Trees” walk, which is accessible to the physically challenged, and the park’s environmental and informational headquarters. Upper Park remains relatively untouched with majestic canyons overlooking Big Chico Creek, which contains some of the most spectacular swimming areas in Northern California. Dogs on leash are allowed. Please clean up after them.

Clear Lake State Park

Description: This city park offers gently rolling green hills and shady areas. The park has large children’s playgrounds, tennis courts and other sports courts. Dogs are allowed but must be on a 6 foot or less leash and people are required to clean up after their pets.

Temescal Canyon Park

Description: There are several trails at this park. Dogs are allowed but must be on a 6 foot or less leash and people need to clean up after their pets. The Sunset Trail is almost a half mile trail that begins at the lower parking lot by Sunset Blvd. It parallels Temescal Creek. The Temescal Loop Trail is about a four and a half mile hike up a canyon. Some areas area steep. If you go about 1.2 miles from the trailhead, you will reach the Temescal waterfall which is seasonal. The park is located at the intersection of Temescal Canyon Road and Sunset Blvd. This park is part of the Santa Monica Recreation Area.

Humber Park

Description: The Devil’s Slide Trail begins at this park. It is rated as a moderately difficult trail. The trail goes for about 6 miles and there is about a 3,000 foot elevation gain. Day passes are required. To get there, take Highway 243 to North Circle Drive. Turn right onto South Circle Drive, and then left to Fern Valley Road. Follow the signs to Humber Park.

Idyllwild Park Nature Center

Description: This park offers 5 1/2 miles of hiking trails. Most of the trails are rated as easy, with the exception of one steep trail. Dogs are allowed, but need to be leashed. Your dog will also need to have a current rabies identification tag. The day use fees are $2 per person, $2 per dog and $1 per child. The park is located on Highway 243, about one mile northwest of Idyllwild.

Description: This is a seasonal dog park which offers a wading pool for dogs to use during the summer. The park is open from May through November from 7 am to 10 pm daily. The dog park is located at 4257 W. Alamos at El Capitan. To get to the dog park from Highway 99, exit at Shaw Avenue and head east. In about a mile turn right on El Capitan.

Description: The amenities at this dog park include 2.5 fenced acres for dogs to run off-leash, potable water, handicap accessible, parking, and limited seating. The park is open from dawn to dusk and is closed Wednesdays until 12pm. To get there, take Highway 65 (City of Lincoln) to Third Street. Go west on Third Street 1.8 miles to Santa Clara (just past the big oak tree).

Loma Linda Dog Park

Description: Licensed dogs over four months are allowed to run leash-free in this area by the casting pond. As usual with all dog parks, owners are responsible for their dogs and must supervise them at all times. Laurel Canyon Park

Description: This nice dog park is located in the hills of Studio City. It is completely fenced with water and even a hot dog stand. The on-leash hours are 10am-3pm and off-leash hours are 6am to10am and 3pm to dusk. To get there, take Laurel Canyon Blvd and go west on Mulholland Blvd. Go about a 1/4 mile and turn left. There is a parking lot below.

Runyon Canyon Dog Park

Description: Runyon Canyon Park is a very large 160 acre, mountainous park. Of the 160 acres, 90 acres are designated as off-leash. There is no fencing around the off-leash area so dogs should be under good voice control. Dogs are not allowed in the children’s play area in the park and must be on leash in other parts of the park. The park is open during daylight hours. There are hiking trails in all parts of the park. To get to the park you need to take N. Vista Street from Hollywood Blvd north. Turn right on Runyon Canyon Rd and you will enter the park.

Silverlake Dog Park

Description: This is one of the best dog parks in the Los Angeles area and it usually averages 30-40 dogs. It is located at approximately 2000 West Silverlake Blvd. It’s on the south side of the reservoir in Silverlake, which is between Hollywood and downtown L.A. between Sunset Blvd. and the 5 Freeway. The easiest way to get there is to take the 101 Freeway to Silverlake Blvd. and go east. Be careful about street parking because they ticket in some areas. Description: This park is bordered by Jackson, Clay, Steiner and Scott streets. It is across from the tennis courts. The first Sunday of every month is Pug Day at this park. It’s a casual meeting of pug owners which takes place at the north end of park, usually between 3:30 – 5:00, weather permitting. At the gathering, there can be 20-50 pugs. Dogs need to be on leash but residents are trying to make it a legal off-leash area.

Description: This 100 acre shoreline park is part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Enjoy scenic views of the Golden Gate Bridge while you walk or jog along the paved paths. Off leash areas include the beaches along the waterline and the large, grassy landing field, with the exception of the West beach nearest to Fort Point where they must be leashed. They must be under firm voice control when not on lead. Dogs must be leashed when not in the off lead areas, and they must be cleaned up after at all times. Dogs are not allowed in the fenced restoration zones or the lagoon area. The park is located north of Mason Street and southeast of the Golden Gate Bridge.

Description: This dog-friendly Recreation Area spans 76,500 acres of land and water. It starts at the coastline south of San Francisco, goes into San Francisco and then north of the Golden Gate Bridge. Many of the San Francisco beaches and parks are part of this Rec Area including Baker Beach, Fort Funston and Ocean Beach. One of the trails is located south of Baker Beach. From Lincoln Avenue, turn onto Bowley Street and head towards the ocean. There is a parking lot next to the beach. Dogs must be on leash.

Description: This land was an Army base and is now a dog-friendly national park (borders up to the Golden Gate Recreation Area.) The park has over 500 historic buildings and miles of nice hiking trails. Leashes may or may not be required as this issue is going back and forth in the courts currently. It’s located south of the Golden Gate Bridge. From the Bridge and Hwy101, take Hwy 1 south. It will turn into Park Presidio Blvd. You can also enter the park from Arguello Blvd.

Description: This regional park offers hiking trails, a botanical garden, volleyball courts, softball fields, campground and a designated off-leash dog park. The hiking trails offer scenic views on Eagle Rock and a cool creek walk along Dairy Creek. The Eagle Rock trail is about .7 miles and is rated strenuous. There are two other trails including Dairy Creek that are about 1 to 2 miles long and rated easy. Dogs must be on leash at all times, except in the dog park. To get to the park from Highway 101, head south and then take the Santa Rosa St. exit. Turn left on Santa Rosa which will turn into Highway 1 after Highland Drive. Continue about 5 miles and the park will be on your left, across from Cuesta College.

Description: Unlike almost all larger California cities, Santa Barbara does not have any fenced off-leash dog parks nor any off-leash unfenced dog runs that are available throughout the day. However, they do have five unfenced park areas with very limited off-leash hours. Please check the signs to find the off-leash areas and the hours as they may change. The five parks are Toro Canyon Park Meadow, daily (8 am to 10 am, 4 pm – sunset), Patterson Open Space, M – F (8 am to 10 am), Tucker’s Grove, M – F (8 am – 10 am, 4 pm – sunset), Tabano Hollow, daily (4 pm to sunset) and Isla Vista Park, M – F (8 am – 10 am, 4 pm – sunset). Please keep in mind that in winter there is not much time between 4 pm and sunset.

Description: This off leash dog park is located in the Skypark complex next to the soccer fields. The dog park offers 1.2 fully enclosed acres which is divided into two sections. One section is for small dogs under 25 pounds, puppies or shy dogs. The other section is for all dogs but primarily for larger and more active dogs. Other amenities include water bowls, wading pools, tennis balls, other dog toys, drinking fountains, shaded seating, plastic bags and pooper scoopers. To get there from Highway 17, take the Mt. Hermon exit and follow Mt. Hermon Road straight. Pass two stoplights and take the second right into the shopping center at the movie theatre sign. Go about .1 miles and turn left on Bluebonnet Road.
